Grow: last of the summer crop

As we reached mid February, my first vegetable crop stared to come to an end. The snow peas were few and far between and the lettuce started to bolt, so it was time to harvest and start again.

I actually found it hard at first to just pull everything up and start again; I felt like I was murdering the plants. Ludicrious I know, and in the end it was actually quite cathartic to pull the roots from the soil, make food with the harvest and compost the rest. It closed the loop.

Shop: local natural and wholefood suppliers

In the process of my Internet trawling of late, I’ve come across a couple if awesome stores that are right on my doorstep (I’m in Oakleigh).

While I have resigned myself to that fact that not everything I need can grow in my garden and I will have to still shop for goodies, I was surprised and excited to find a few suppliers just a quick drive away.

Make: mason jar gifts

As mentioned in a previous post, I wanted to make some of my gifts this year (for sustainability and budgetary reasons) and I’d seen some cool ideas for mason jar gifts. After doing some internet searches, I decided do make a combination of cookies, body scrubs and happiness jars (as separate items, not all rolled into one crazy present!)

I bought all of the jars from Kmart or The Reject Shop ($2 each – win!). I got the fabric and the brown tags from Spotlight, but you could get something similar from any craft store. I made the crochet hearts – you can find more info here.
